The Greatest Gathering of Westies on the East Coast

95 Westies Marched

The greatest gathering of Westies on the East Coast occurred on December 7 with over 95 Westies marching, prancing, and wowing the thousands of people lining the streets of Old Town Alexandria, VA, to celebrate the start of the Christmas season in the 53rd Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade.

Westies marched behind the Westie Rescue banner in support of the organization's 30th year of participation in the Christmas Walk and the 33rd year of rescuing, rehabilitation and rehoming Westies needing help. During those years of service, Westie Rescue has helped over 1,400 Westies find great new homes.

The Safeway parking lot in Alexandria was turned into a early morning meet and greet location point for all the Westies to mingle. Many an owner was shocked to see their Westie's reaction to everyone looked just like them. Everywhere they looked there were more family members! Owners exchanged stories of Westie ownership and told tall tales of their little buddy hunting rodents, chasing squirrels, and nightly bedtime cover stealing.

Among the 95 Westies waiting for the parade's start, were a few who have been recently adopted. They came with their humans to show off how good they are doing and to help Westie Rescue's efforts in showing the public that "Second Hand Dogs Make First Rate Pets!"

In attendance was Fergus, in the geezer wagon, celebrating his upcoming 17th year birthday. He was pulled the entire parade route by his momma. She reports he was the hit of the parade as everyone wanted to pet the big old guy.

Fergus #2, who is in foster care, was carried by his dad most of the parade as when you only have three good legs, you need a little help once in a while. He was very happy saying hello to everyone he could see.

Finn was there to show off how cute little guys can be sporting a fresh grooming and clean too both a novel showing.

Benji showed off his new mom and a new jacket.

Roxie showed up with a compete coat of fur. A new look for her compared to how she came in just a year ago. Poor Roxie was suffering from a skin infection causing huge section of fur loss. It is amazing how much proper medical care and lots of love can improve one's life and body.

Arlo one of the puppies whelped by "puppy momma" Tina in PA, came to show how much he has grown in the past year. His proud momma and dad came in from Warrenton, VA to march with the other 95 Westies.

The famous escape artist, Miss Rita, came to say her roaming days are over as she has shifted to being a momma's girl. So, there is no reason to leave home when you have all the love to hold you close.

When the parade finally started moving, the waves of Westies marched down the street, cries could be heard coming from the crowd ranging from "We want your dog!" to "Oh, here come the Westies", to "Oh, look how cute they are!" and even "Here comes the Best Import from Scotland!" Yes, Westies really are the best import from the Scottish Highlands where they historically protected the farmer's crop storage from rodents and even the local riffraff. Today they are house pets, best buddies, and protectors of the yard from squirrels, rodents, mailmen, and the Amazon delivery trucks that infest very neighborhood coast to coast.

Westie Rescue would like to express our thanks to everyone who came out to show off their Westie and to support our efforts. It was a great show of support having almost 100 Westies walking down the street. Westies and their owners took up a whole block going past the reviewing stand. The Garand Marshall announcer even thought it was the largest group in the parade!

"No Show" Malcom w/Excuse #12

Hey Uncle Stephen, Malcom here. I am so sorry I couldn't join you and all my adorable look-alikes at the parade this year. My mom and I are really hoping to make it one of these years, we even have our red plaid ready to go. I'm so glad it was a huge success! Holy moly 95 Westies in one place has got to be an overload of cuteness and love.

Thank you for all that you do including finding my chapter 2 forever home. I can already see the gifts piling up for me under our Christmas tree and I hope there are tons of treats because ever since my doctor told my mom I might consider losing 1/2 - one pound I don't seem to get as many goodies as I used to. What a meanie, IMO I'm perfect and my mom agrees.

Westie Rescue will give him a pass this year so there will not be coal in that Santa gift bag.....
