Westie Rescue MidAtlantic Updates – July 2022

In the past weeks the number of older Westies coming into the program has exploded. Each Westie has been cared for at our wonderful vets in Annapolis Maryland, where they receive a complete health checkup, blood test screening, shots updated, any issues identified and treatments started, a warm bath, nails trimmed, and a beginning of great food and a regular schedule. All of this effort and expense is to make sure their next step in life will be successful and stress free.

Our first up is Mr Iain,

Iain is a 13-year-old male whose owner just passed away in a senior development where both were frequently seen walking the pathways and hallways together, saying hello to everyone.

Iain has been adopted by a repeat adopter whose own Westie passed on last year. He will be hanging out and enjoying a fenced in yard, his new family members and a second chance at a great new life.

His new mom writes: Iain is just a lovely gentleman. He has done well, enjoying going out on his own, exploring the house for new toys, demanding bed space and gently introducing himself to Harpo the hound and Peanut the Peke. His owner adored him and it shows as he is totally happy to try something new. We are so lucky to have him and thank you for making this possible.

I would like to also thank the daughter of the original owner to let her know what a great job they have achieved as Iain is just wonderful. The hard decision to let him find a second life was so kind and to say he will be cared for forever and ever.

Next up is Joey!

Joey – our latest little senior guy who came into the rescue program as he just lost his mom of 15 years. Well loved and cared for little guy who has been seeking a new chapter in his life.

He would like to give you an update:

Joey reports "Hi everyone, it be me again. As you now know, I lost my mom last month so I am an orphan now at the ripe age of 15 years. I have to make hard decisions all by myself. Before my mom died, she did all the thinking I just was a follower.

Uncle Stephen and I have been taking calls and emails from up and down the East Coast, as people took one look at me and said "Hey, I am interested in giving Joey a new life!" For all your interest I am truly thankful.

I did the down select and I have been adopted! I drove down in Roanoke, VA last week, to meet my new mom and dad who have been waiting for a geezer like me to come along and to make sure we are a good fit with each other. I have packed my bags. I stole some extra treats from the staff at the Vet. I picked out a dry food I will eat (I am taking 15# of the stuff with me as my tummy has not been to kind to the rest of me for all the trash food I was eating). The hospital had all my paper work and stuff ready, (as an orphan you never have too much stuff), and I will be on the road to adventure in the final chapter of my life.

I will be slowly walking the byways and yards just outside of town with my new humans, who like me walk slowly. It is a great adventure as they have deer and squirrels all over the neighborhood. I have been busy telling all these pests that is a new Sheriff in town so they better make themselves scarce, as I may be slow but I am fierce, to misquote Shakespeare. (My mom liked the classics as she read them as bed time stories to me when I was little).

I have been sleeping a lot and eating all my treats as I am a geezer, but I still like my morning walks to inspect the neighborhood. Dad and I go for drives to run errands. When we get home, I snooze as those trips wear me out. Guarding the car, making sure the mail goes in the blue box, etc.

Next up is Miss Fontina

Fontina is an adult mix breed Westie who was dropped off at a shelter with skin bacterial infections and bugs all over her body. She was malnourished, dehydrated, and her health was compromised. She tipped the scales at 7.2 pounds….

She has been given a complete medical workup, health checkup, shots updated, baths, meds and lots of food as she is nothing but skin and bones. Her dental was completed yesterday and she had more than a few teeth pulled so she is on more meds to ensure a complete recovery.

She is off today to a new life! She will be on a trail stay at her new home in Delaware after going through the dental work procedure. She has been adopted by someone who can see passed her being extra small, shaved down, and needing lots of love and attention. She is very gentle, likes a human touch and likes to be your shadow.

And last, but not least, Mr Ralph (No pictures yet, sorry)

Ralph is 4 years old little male who was dropped off at a shelter, having lots of minor medical issues and needing shots, neutering, dry eye treatments, baths, and needing some remedial training in behavior modification and socialization, as his owners had both been seniors who died within a few months of each other, leaving him to learn on his own.

He is not ready for adoption as he picked up something at the shelter delaying his neutering. He will need a STRONG owner as he is a suck up and will stand on his hind legs to say hello. He will need "Doggie 101 training program" and socialization as he will not let you touch certain areas of his body like face and tail. All of these issues are easily resolved through love, consistency, and repetition.

The best home will be with an experienced Westie owner who will be the task master daily!

When he is ready to be adopted, he will be sending out a request.
