Scottish Christmas Walk Parade 2022 – Wrap up

Westie images and stories from the soggy parade streets of Alexandria VA.

Following a week of perfect weather, Parade Day forecasts said rain and more rain. As predicted, Saturday morning the rain fell. In spite of all that, brave Westies from all over the East Coast gathered with their humans to say hello and grumble about the soggy weather. For the first time in 15 years it rained, drizzled, and soaked all the marchers. With over 40 Westies in attendance, many said, "Wet weather? Who cares! We be of Scottish ancestry, and we are ruff and tuff little buggers!" Just as we stepped off on the 1.5 mile parade route, the rain clouds parted and stopped dropping stuff on their little bodies. A sure sign that great adventure was ahead and the weather gods do like Westies!

For the first time in many years, our large gathering of Westies found ourselves in the front half of the parade groups, just a few spaces behind our dog cousins, the Cairns, who with a little Clorox washing, could be Westies themselves, as quite a few look just like us. That should come as no surprise as after all Westies were bred out of Cairns many many years ago.

The sidewalks were crowded with hundreds and hundreds of poncho clad enthusiastic spectators who pointed, laughed, and shouted at all the little ones dressed up in Scottish finery or rain coats. The geezer wagon hauling Fergus and Cassie got the most laughs as they looked so sad as their wagon bumped along the streets. As a reward, Fergus and Cassie had the doggy lunch special (salmon, rice and carrots) at one of the fancy restaurants in old town as a reward for all the suffering. Fergus said it was the only part of the day he enjoyed….

Fergus (L) and Cassie (R) share a ride in the geezer wagon. Way too old to walk the entire route.

Even with all the bad weather, Westies came from PA, DE, VA, WV, VA, MD, DC, and even NC to join in showing the hundreds of people lining the streets that WESTIES ARE THE BEST IMPORT FROM SCOTLAND!

Westie Rescue MidAtlantic would like to say thank you to one and all who braved the rain and the wet under bellies by marching in Alexandria, Virginia, to show and wow the crowds . See all the images from the parade below. (just swipe left to see more).
